Resumen
Durante un período continuo de diez meses, en el Valle del Cauca, Colombia, en el transcurso del año de 1970, el autor tuvo oportunidad de estudiar varios aspectos del comportamiento de una pareja de estas aves, los cuales se consignan en el presente artículo.
Se hace énfasis en aspectos desconocidos, o poco conocidos de la Historia natural del Zambullidor (Podilymbus podiceps), especialmente sobre lo siguiente:
- duración del ciclo reproductivo en el trópico;
- valor de la plataforma flotante, en la postura y cría de los pollos;
- mortalidad de los pollos durante el período de desarrollo;
- duración del período de dependencia de los pollos;
- tipo de alimentación; modo de capturar los peces, transportarlos y fraccionarlos para alimentar a sus polluelos;
- ingestión de plumas por los adultos y pollos.
Abstract
The author had the opportunity of studying several aspects of the behavior of a pair of Pied-billed Grebes (Podilymbus podiceps) over a period of ten months during 1970 in the Valle del Cauca, Colombia. The points studied in detail were:
- the duration of the reproductive cycle in the tropics;
- the role of the floating platform in egg-laying and rearing of the young;
- the mortality of the chicks during the period of development;
- the length of the period of dependency of the chicks;
- the feeding habits, method of catching, transporting and breaking up the fish for the feeding of the young birds;
- ingestion of feathers by adults and young birds.
